Sclerotherapy
For Spider Veins
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is an injection technique that is used to treats veins that are twisted and enlarged, known as varicose veins. Varicose veins usually occur in the legs.
How does Sclerotherapy work?
Sclerotherapy uses an injection of a special chemical (sclerosant) into the spider veins. The injection damages and scars the inside lining of the vein. This causes the veins to close.
What conditions does Sclerotherapy treat?
Dr. Krushel uses sclerotherapy to treat spider veins, a mild form of varicose veins. Sclerotherapy tends to work well for this type of small varicose veins.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Sclerotherapy take to work?
Small veins will usually disappear faster than larger ones. Spider veins typically disappear in 3-6 weeks. If your veins do respond to treatment, they should not reappear.
How long does a Sclerotherapy treatment last?
Research suggests that sclerotherapy removes problematic spider veins in approximately 80% of cases. For more extensive spider veins, this can require more than one treatment. When sclerotherapy does not work, people may require other treatments, such as surgery.
While sclerotherapy may not be effective for everyone, Dr. Krushel will first carefully assess your veins and provide you with his expectations and advice before any treatment.
Are there any side effects?
Risks and possible side effects of sclerotherapy include bruising, pain at the injection site, swelling, itching, redness or darkening of the skin around the injection site (hyperpigmentation), and formation of blood clots.
Things To Know Before Your Sclerotherapy Treatment
What to expect before treatment?
Prior to scheduling an appointment for Sclerotherapy, Dr. Krushel or his assistant will review your circumstances, with the goal of pre-determining whether Sclerotherapy treatment for spider veins is appropriate for you.
The cost of sclerotherapy depends on how many injections are necessary, and how extensive is the treatment area. Sclerotherapy treatments for spider veins average between $250 – $500 per session.
What to expect during treatment
During this procedure, Dr. Krushel will use ultrasound to assess the spider veins and surrounding veins. And the sclerosant is injected into the spider vein with a small needle.
Post Treament Instructions
After the injection is given, pressure is applied over the veins.
For most people, sclerotherapy for spider veins does not require a substantial recovery period. After the treatment, you will likely be able to walk right away. However, you should avoid strenuous exercise for at least several days. Try not to sit or stand for long periods of time.
For the first 2 weeks after the procedure, avoid exposing your legs to the sun. Dr. Krushel may advise that you wear compression bandages or stockings after the procedure.
