What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal Fillers are inject-able gels made from Hyaluronic Acid- a naturally occurring skin molecule that has a unique capacity to absorb water molecules. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can restore volume to the skin, smooth wrinkles and skin folds, and restore volume to areas of the face, such as the cheeks, lips, and jaw. I typically use the Revanesse and Restylane dermal fillers, for their safety and reliability.
How do Dermal Fillers work?
The Aging Process, Dermal Fillers, and Facial Rejuvenation
As we age, the youthful lift and support provided by our cheek bones and our skin’s collagen gradually diminishes. This can lead to a tired look and sagging or drooping in the lower face. This aging process results in loss of jawline and jowling and can also contribute deep lines and creases in the lower face, such as deep nasolabial folds, smile lines, and marionette lines.
Fortunately, small amounts of appropriately of dermal filler can restore one’s appearance by providing lift and replacing lost volume. Long lasting structural dermal fillers are commonly used to volumize and rejuvenate such areas as the cheeks, jawline, and temples to provide lift and support, resulting in a more youthful and rested appearance. Soft and malleable dermal fillers are commonly administered to soften the sunken areas such as the tear troughs, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, smile lines, smoker’s lines, and neck lines. Ultra soft dermal fillers can be injected directly into the skin to directly hydrate the skin, resulting in a refreshed glow of well-hydrated skin.
What areas do Dermal Fillers treat?
- Dermal Fillers in cheeks, temples, and jaw can be used to provide natural lift and support.
- Treatment of the nasolabial folds, marionette lines, tear troughs, and smile lines is used to reduce lines and creases.
- Lip Fillers can be used to restore lost lip volume as we age and enhance existing lip structure.
- Dermal Fillers in the nose, a “liquid nose job” can be effective in creating a natural and soft appearing nasal structure.
- Fillers can be used to treat necklace lines of the neck and restore volume to aging hands.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do Dermal Fillers take to work?
Unlike Botox and Dysport, which usually takes 5-10 days to provide an effect, most of the benefits of dermal fillers are immediately apparent at the time of the injection. However, the hyaluronic acid dermal filler will continue to absorb water and soften and smooth for approximately one week after administration.
How long do Dermal Filler treatments last?
The longevity of a dermal filler treatment depends upon many factors, including the area being treated, and the type of filler used. Dermal fillers in the nasolabial folds, lips, and marionette lines tend to last 6-9 months while structural fillers in the cheeks temples and jawlines can last 18 months.

The potential risks and side effects of dermal fillers can be reduced by careful and experienced placement. We pre-treat the area with topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort. On occasion, there can be redness, swelling, and bruising of the injection site that can last a number of days.
